The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is an introductory wine course designed for beginners who want to understand wine with confidence. Hosted at Quinta da Plansel, this internationally recognised qualification offers a practical and accessible introduction to wine styles, tasting, and food pairing.

This course is ideal as a first step into wine education and can be easily combined with Portuguese wine specialisation sessions during the same study week.

Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course.
Participants must be of legal drinking age to take part in tastings; this does not affect the qualification.

Venue and booking

Yes. This course is designed specifically for beginners.

Do I need to work in wine?

No. Many students attend for personal interest.

What happens after my purchase?

After your purchase we will send you a confirmation of booking. Please note that with Multibanco payments, you need to add an extra step and confirm the payment with your phone before the booking is definitive. We will send you the course materials and books per post. With WSET 1 and WSET 2 we will send you the books 2 weeks prior to the start of the course. With WSET level 3 we send you the books directly after your registation.

When finishing your course you are welcomed in the world of WSET. You can always contact us or become a member of our wine community in Portugal.

Course Materials

You will receive books. During the course, we will provide you with wines to taste.

Exams & certification

At the end of your course you will do an exam. Once passed, you will receive the officials WSET certification from London and a pin.

Study time

Prior to your course we advise you to read through your books. This way, you're prepared for the course, walk through the theory quicker and dive into the practical part of the wine study sooner. For WSET 1, we like you to prepare but it's not nessecary to study at home. For WSET 2, you'll be running through the book at home which takes approximately 6 hours. During the course there's about 4 hours of study time planned as well.

Can I take specialisation courses as well?

Yes. They are designed to complement WSET studies. Enhance your experience by adding a Highlights of Portugal course, a short introduction to Portuguese wine styles, or join the Wine and food lunch to apply pairing principles in practice.

Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course. When you want to participate in the tasting of alcoholic beverages, you must have reached the minimum age for drinking alcohol. However, if this is not an obstacle to obtain the qualification in itself.
