Wine courses at the Tejo Region

Ode Winery in Tejo - venue for wine course with Plansel Wine School

Ode winery was founded in 1902, so it has a long history. Nowadays, Ode Winery is a  state of the art wine producer located in the quiet surroundings of Vila Chã de Ourique, a quiet historical township 50 minutes from downtown Lisbon in the wine region Tejo

It is a great privilege to study at ODE Winery! This is because the winemaker from ODE Winery is also a Plansel International Wine School teacher: Maria Vicente. Between the impressive oak foudres, brass stills and stainless-steel deposits she helps you to discover all the wine’s aromas!

PIWS has vineyards and wineries at six locations. At WSET Level 2, we gratefully use this opportunity to explain the work in the vineyard and the winemaking process. Students find it an unforgettable experience to see all the theory in practice like this.

Ode Winery in the TEJO REGION

In the heart of Portugal less then 100 km from the capital city Lisbon we find the Tejo region.
To the Portuguese, Tejo is known as the land of vineyards, olive groves, cork forests, Mertolengo cattle, and the famous Lusitano horses.

But for lovers of Portuguese wines TEJO means lively, affordable wines with fruity characteristics and high natural acidity.
Formerly known as Ribatejo, since 2009 the region has now simply been called Tejo and is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the country.
Vineyards decorate the banks of the River Tejo (Tagus in English) since Roman times, and the influence of past cultures that grew grapes is evident in the many architectural relics that abound throughout the landscape.

The region’s wines offer a diverse range of styles to suit different tastes and budgets. Tejo’s indigenous red grapes include Touriga Nacional, Portugal’s most famous grape variety, as well as Trincadeira and Castelão. The aromatic Fernão Pires and vibrant Arinto produce the region’s most refreshing white wines. These indigenous grapes are doing great in Tejo’s warm climate and complex soils,
